The Farewell Drifters' Top 10 States of 2009

What a great year we had in 09. Many states gave us bliss, but here are our top 10.

The Farewell Drifters' Top 10 States of 2009

10. Colorado – this state gets top ten honors for 2009 simply for inviting us to be a part of the Rockygrass festival in 2010. That’s how cool we think Rockygrass will be.

9. Connecticut – we played the diverse, yet still very bluegrass festival, called Strawberry Park in May 09, and we’ll be back in 2010.

8. Virginia – we played a number of great smaller festivals in Virginia, and also found a wonderful new venue in Roanoke, the Kirk Ave Music Hall – we’re there again on January 23.

7. Alabama – our song “Birmingham” reached No. 1 on the XM/Sirius’s most played list in 2009!

6. Kentucky – we were honored to be part of the International Newgrass Festival outside Bowling Green. KY is also the home state of the brothers Britt, and in 2009 we found a hip little coffeeshop to play in Frankfort – see us there again on 2/12/10!

5. Massachusetts – we played an intimate show just outside Boston, and had our hero, Peter Rowan, join us on stage for a rousing version of his hit, “Dust Bowl Children”

4. New York – two words – Grey Fox.

3. Tennessee – this is the great state we call home, and we love it. Bluegrass Underground was a phenomenal cave concert experience. And Nashville is where we’ve found true friends and kindred spirits. We played for a full house in the Polk Theatre as a part of NPR’s “Says You” in August!

2. Pennsylvania – the addition of Erie, PA native, Christian Sedelmyer on fiddle was the best thing to happen to the Drifters since sliced bread was introduced for van sandwiches. PA also brought us the legendary Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival and a chance to play the Sellersville Theater with Ramblin’ Jack Elliot.

1. North Carolina – gave us the giant festival of festivals, Merlefest (midnight jam, yes!), and our new hometown away from home, Charlotte. This beautiful state was abundantly good to us Drifters this year as we played from the mountains to the piedmont to the friendly coastal plains of Wilmington.
